The Lines

First Nine (初九)

The dragon lying hid in the deep; it is not the time for active doing.

Your gifts are still gathering strength beneath the surface. This is a season for inner cultivation—nurture your abilities quietly, build your foundation, and wait for the right moment to emerge.

Second Nine (九二)

The dragon appearing in the field; it will be advantageous to meet with the great man.

You are ready to step into the world. Seek out mentors, allies, and wise guides who can help you channel your growing power toward meaningful purpose.

Third Nine (九三)

The superior man active and vigilant all the day, and in the evening still careful and apprehensive; the position is dangerous, but there will be no mistake.

Constant effort and self-awareness are your safeguards now. Stay alert, remain humble despite your strength, and balance ambition with caution—this vigilance will protect you from misstep.

Fourth Nine (九四)

The dragon as if leaping up, but still in the deep; there will be no mistake.

You stand at a threshold between advance and restraint. Trust your instinct to move forward or hold back as circumstances demand. Flexibility and discernment matter more than force.

Fifth Nine (九五)

The dragon on the wing in the sky; it will be advantageous to meet with the great man.

You have reached a position of true influence and visibility. This is your moment to lead and inspire. Collaborate with capable allies and let your vision soar—great things are within reach.

Sixth Nine (上九)

The dragon exceeding the proper limits; there will be occasion for repentance.

Beware the peril of excess. When you reach the summit, pride and overreach invite decline. Guard against arrogance, temper ambition with wisdom, and remember that all peaks are followed by valleys.

Use of Nines (用九)

If the host of dragons thus appearing were to divest themselves of their heads, there would be good fortune.

When all six lines transform to yang, you stand at the apex of change. The teaching here is paradoxical: true fortune comes not from displaying dominance, but from releasing ego and embracing humility. Let go of the need to lead visibly; the greatest power lies in serving without claiming credit.
